What to do in the Castelli Romani

The lake, the country taverns and Rome half an hour away by train.

Castelli Romani (Rome)

The Castelli Romani are the countryside of Rome: villages on the hills, two lakes inside volcanic craters, wine and generous tables. You sleep here and reach the city in half an hour, or you stay and go from village to village.

In the area

MarinoThe wine village, with its cellars and fountains. In October it holds the oldest grape festival in Italy, when wine runs from the fountains.
Lake Albano and Castel GandolfoThe lake sits inside a crater: you walk along the shore and have lunch on the terraces. Castel Gandolfo has the village and the gardens of the Papal Villas.
Frascati and the fraschetteFrascati is the name of the wine and of the town. In the fraschette food arrives on brown paper and you drink the local white.
Ariccia and porchettaThe monumental bridge, Palazzo Chigi and the porchetta taverns, where roast pork is a serious matter.

Nearby

NemiThe village above the smaller lake, famous for its wild strawberries. An afternoon is enough, with a stop at the Roman ships museum.
Rocca di Papa and Monte CavoThe highest point of the Castelli: from the top you see the sea, Rome and the whole plain.
RomeHalf an hour by train or car: you go for the day and come back to sleep in the green. It is why many of our guests choose this area.
Ciampino airportA few kilometres away: anyone flying early sleeps here instead of in the city, and leaves without the stress.

When to come

Spring and autumn are the best months, with food festivals and the grape harvest. In summer it is cooler than Rome and the lake is a relief. Winter still works, thanks to Ciampino and to people visiting Rome out of season.
